1709 - Violin "Greffulhe"

Soundboard of spruce at fine grain at the joint, that widens towards the flanks, hemmed with inlays of lozenges and small disques in ivory on the black stucco. Back of one piece of curly maple to broad curl descending to the right, hemmed with inlais of lozanges and small disques of ivory on black stucco. Ribs of wood simila to that of the back, decorated with plant shoots inhabited by stylized figures of birds (eagles ?) and dogs in the race, engraved and filled with black filler. Scroll of wood similar to that of the back, decorated with plant shoots engraved and filled with black filler. Orange-brown varnish.

  • The name of the instrument does not seem to arise, as has been believed by many, from the image of the bird drawn in the ribs, but from one of the owners of the instrument, a French Viscount Greffulhe, (not "Greffuhle" as it is written usually).
